How to Clean your Mirror

4 Easy Steps to Clean Mirrors to Shine like a diamond

At Luxe Mirrors, we understand how important it is for you to keep your newly-purchased mirror in pristine condition. In order to help you achieve this, we have put together a simple guide on how to clean mirrors correctly and get those sparkling results!

Many people believe that cleaning a mirror is an easy task that can be completed with just the use of soap and water, however, this is not the case. While it is a rather easy chore, if you don’t clean your mirror properly using the correct techniques, you can be left with nasty streaks and smudges, or worse, leftover dirt. A mirror is often the focal point of many rooms and will fail to reflect the light correctly if it has smears and streaks.

For those of you who use improper techniques and cleaners when cleaning a mirror, it can be frustrating to see that your best efforts have gone in vain. Nevertheless, there are many methods you can use to clean your mirror, ensuring that it is left sparkling with no streaks, specks, or fog on the glass.

Follow the 4 simple steps in this guide to help restore your mirror to its former glory and maintain a shiny, reflective surface.

1. Make Your Own Mirror Cleaning Solution

Many people are under the impression that a window cleaner will successfully clean your mirror, however, most of the time you are left with a misty fog on the glass due to the harsh chemicals used in these products. The best way to combat this is to create your own, homemade mirror. To do this, all you require is distilled vinegar combined with some warm water, and a spray bottle to pour it into. The ratios of these ingredients will depend on the level of dirt on the mirror; for heavily soiled mirrors, increase the potency of the vinegar, otherwise, equal parts are advised.

2. Wipe the Mirror with a Dry Cloth

Before you make use of the cleaning solution, give the mirror a pre-clean by wiping it down with a dry microfibre cloth. This will help get rid of dust and other debris that will otherwise get smeared around when you apply the cleaning solution and wipe the mirror. Be sure to clean corners out where dirt and dust typically accumulate. Remember, the more dirt you can get rid of beforehand, the better the end result will be.

3. Apply the Cleaning Solution

Now is the time to get your mirror shining and smudge-free with your homemade, vinegar-based cleaning solution. For best results, using the right material to clean with is essential. A microfiber cloth is ideal owing to its soft and non-abrasive texture, therefore ensuring it will not scratch the glass. Alternatively, newspapers are very effective in cleaning mirror or glass surfaces; simply take a sheet of newspaper and crumple it in your hand to create a cleaning cloth.

For the cleaning process, spray the mirror with the solution and wipe it in circular motions. Clean one section at a time and ensure that you don’t miss out on corners and edges.

4. Buff the Mirror

Lightly dampen a fresh sheet of newspaper and wipe over the mirror, again using circular motions to buff the glass. Make sure you dry any drip marks on the mirror as they could leave it with unpleasant streaks. If you find any streaks on the mirror before you begin this step, buff those areas first and continue with the rest of the mirror.

Extra Tips When Cleaning Your New Mirror

Listed below are a few things to keep in mind when cleaning a mirror to help you achieve best results.

  • Limit ventilation in the room to prevent the cleaner from drying up too quickly on the mirror (this leads to more streaks)
  • Start at the top and clean from side to side, making your way down to the bottom of the mirror
  • Clean one section at a time to avoid streaks
  • Use a warm cleaning solution to help remove stubborn dirt with ease
  • Clean the surface with a soft brush to peel away stuck-on grime; then wipe with a dry cloth (before applying the cleaning solution)

With the help of the cleaning guide + tips above, you should now be left with a gleaming mirror that is in immaculate condition. When you are finished, you can stand back and admire your beautiful mirrored piece in the style setting you have created!
